SCHERING-PLOUGH LABO N.V. is part of the multinational Schering-Plough Corporation, a pharmaceutical group engaged in sales of products from its own research.
1972 saw the establishment of a plant in the Heist-op-den-Berg industrial estate, with the aim of manufacturing and distributing medicines for Belgium,
the Netherlands, Luxembourg, West Germany, the UK, the Scandinavian countries, Switzerland, Austria, Eastern Europe and the Middle and Far East.
TODAY, this plant is the largest and most complex manufacturing and distribution centre outside the United States.
In Heist-op-den-Berg, no fewer than 2800 different products (in 28 languages) are manufactured from 235 different formulations for export to 90 countries worldwide.
Tablets, syrups, ointments, sterile powders, eye-drops and injections are manufactured in accordance with the strictest "current Good Manufacturing Practices" (cGMP) regulations.
THE MANUFACTURING PLANT at Heist-op-den-Berg operates with great efficiency and meets the highest quality standards.
This is recognised within the group and over the years has led to continuous growth in the number of new products and brands.
The high level of expertise and motivation of its approximately 800 employees enables Schering-Plough to meet strict delivery schedules and to supply top-quality products.
Thanks to this reputation, the plant now occupies the position of the leading supplier of pharmaceutical products within the Schering-Plough group.
CONTINUOUS INVESTMENT in technology has contributed to this success: automated manufacturing and packaging equipment increasingly is installed,
while store operations have been streamlined through the introduction of bar codes and radio-communications with the central computer system.
The past three years have seen considerable investment in extending the manufacturing facilities (new and larger manufacturing halls and a push to more automation):
By the end of 1998 a fully new manufacturing facility for tablets was completed at a value of 37 million euros. A new organisational structure based on focused manufacturing has been introduced in this unit, aimed at reducing throughput times.
The entire manufacturing process, from raw material weighing to packaging of the end product, is completed in a single line.
CLOSE TO 33 million euros will be invested in 2005.
In 2006, 30 million euros will be devoted to launching new projects.
IN SEVEN YEARS' TIME, annual production at Heist-op-den-Berg will have more than doubled - production of 120 million units was planned for the start of this century.
In 2004 we reached a new record of 133 million units. For 2005 this figure will be 145 million. It will rise even higher in the coming years.
